In the beginning of this alictre Schiappa stated how he believes that all definitions are political. At first I did not see his point but it’s true. “Defining what is or is not part of our shared reality is a profoundly political act.” The purpose of definitions is to know what words mean and the concept behind them. If there is a political force influencing the way these definitions are formed they could very well be trying to influence us in one direction. Nonetheless, the rest of the alictre Schiappa goes on to talk about wetlands. The way he explains wetlands to the reader is very straight forward, which I enjoyed. By definition, wetlands are classified by three main factors: hydrology, hydric soil, and hydrophyte. Wetlands help to sustain life more efficiently because they produce vegetation that photosynthesizes faster than vegetation from nonwetlands. It was also interesting to hear about President Bush’s campaign “no net loss.” It seems as though he was trying to be environmentally supportive while not having a burden on him of “no loss.” Although, it sounds like it helped the environmentalists start a movement to protect wetlands in America. In conclusion, the main idea I got from this alictre is that in our society there are many views to definitions of words and concepts. In this case, Schiappa shows how wetlands are viewed in a political and environmental way. It also shows how matters of the environment can be handled in completely opposite ways.
